This study explores the experiences of pre-service teachers enrolled in a music integrated literacy methods course. Using both case study and portraiture research methods, this researcher seeks to highlight the voices of pre-service teachers as they share their encounter with music as a part of their teacher preparation program. Participants were asked to self-identify as a member of one of the following groups: (a) those with formal training in music, (b) those who consider themselves self-taught musicians, and (c) those with no training in music. Data was analyzed to determine if there were any differences in thoughts and attitudes among these groups of participants. Additionally, data were analyzed to determine pre-service teachers’ attitudes toward the use of the arts in their future teaching and their thoughts on the benefits the arts might hold for their students. Data analysis includes both traditional and arts-based methods.
